Is it possible to "bench flash" an ECU not actually hooked up to a car? If I hook up power, ground, and the appropriate ODB2 connector wires, would that do the trick?

Ok, I finally have the harness and generic OBD2 plug to wire up. Now the question is, what wires?

My guess is for the ECU harness:
https://www.xcceleration.com/pinouts/20 ... inouts.pdf
Power - D2, D3
Ground - C17, A22
SSM - A21 (goes to OBD2 connector pin 10)

Then wire the OBD2 connector:
http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.p ... 1099973620
Pin 10 -> A21 from ECU
Pin 12,13 -> Ground
Pin 1 -> Power

Am I on the right track?

You need to supply an ignition voltage too.

So add power to A5 (iginition swtich)?

Do I only need the one wire for SSM to the OBD connector?

If A5 is your pin then yes.
Yes SSM is one wire, (and ground).

I just finished flashing the ECU on the bench. In case anyone else is interested, this is what I hooked up for a 2002 WRX ECU:

POWER: A5, D10, D2, D3
GROUND: A14, C17,A7, A15 (A22?)
ODB2: A21->10 , A10->6 , A20->8, (+)->1, (-)->12/13

Bump up this old thread, can anyone help me bench flash a 2007+ Subaru ECU? Tried powering up with a similar scheme as described here. I was successful with my 2002 ECU to test out this method but when I set it up with the 08 pinout and my 08 LGT ECU, I am not able to communicate with the ECU via SSM or CAN.
