Hello! my name is Carlos and I'm from Puerto Rico... i have a 02 Bug for almost 10 years! and no upgrades at all!

Last month I've thought buying a '12 WRX, but i love my Bugeye so much, that i decided to keep him, insted of buying a new one, upgrade it! Already got some parts for it, like a TBE, uppipe, injectors, fuel pump (just fuel pump installed) and of course Tactrix... I'm trying to understand and learn how to re-tune the ECU my self for a month or so, the problem is that I have no idea where to start.
I have installed all programs, read most posts and tutorials about tuning on RomRaider, compared MY ROM file with modded ones, and don't know where to start, they still very complex! I mean, lets say I have my TBE installed, what parameters should I remap on my ECU? just AFR? and how I know that they are correct!? that's my concern, I don't want to harm my car at all !

Any Help will be very appreciated! Thanks guys!

Hello Carlos,

You are doing a very smart thing! There are many people that go out and try without having any idea of what they are doing. ;)

Keep on reading!

I remember reading a very good Subaru Tuning guide explaining what to do and how most of the systems concerning the engine work.

Then when you have started reading you can download a couple of roms that other people have done. Compare these to your stock maps (maps are the tables in your rom, your rom is what you download and upload with the Taxtrix and EcuFlash).

If you have the time and you really want to learn you should do one mod at the time, one map at the time and log the results.

Then you can give a small donation to the people running RomRaider!

I am sure that there are plenty of people here that are willing to help you!

:)
Patrick

Carlos,

Glad you're taking it slow! Reading will help you understand the concepts, but you won't fully understand it (unless you're a genius) until you get your hands dirty

There are really two major things that you should understand fully before you start any real work on your car.

1) air/fuel relationship
2) when to ignite the above mixture

Once you have a grasp of those relationships, you should learn about how the various sensors on the car work. In particular concentrate on how the MAF sensor voltage correlates to mass of air pulled into the engine, and how the ECU interprets that value in order to inject the proper amount of fuel.

One of the best ways to learn about what your cars ECU is doing is by logging various parameters.

Don't put anything "performance" wise on your car yet. Keep it stock and start logging your drives to your friends house; log WOT pulls. Then import all that data into the many great spreadsheets available here and try to make correlations in the data. Again, air/fuel/iginition timing being the key players.

I believe the guide Patrick was talking about is bad noodle's tuning guide.

Read it over, and over, and over, then translate it into your mother language, then read it again.
Lots of great info in there.

And don't forget to use the search on this page and google ;), and if you get really stuck post your questions in the appropriate section. (more then likely they have been answered already though)

Take care and happy learning

That attitude isn't going to make you any friends. Please see the definition of 'Volunteer' in the dictionary :)

I am also starting the process. Although I cheated and started with an OTS map. After a lot of reading and looking at ROMs to compare I started the long process of doing a lot of logging and analyzing to get a better idea of what is going on.

The hard part is actually making changes. I started by doing things like,
*resizing the FLKC load and RPM tables to get more information
*Mess with CL/OL transition
Now I am working on a lower boost version of my OTS map work on timing (since I know the limits).

My biggest difficulty is that it takes a lot of time since I am being very cautious and making small changes. I look forward to seeing your approach.
