So I inherited a project. I could use a little help identifying what it is exactly, and what the potential is of this engine..
Cast in the top front EJ20
Stamped in the top rear 189224 and 961579
It is definately not the same as my 02 WRX motor, the intake manifold is different (the mounting bolts are all lined up instead of offset) and there are no TGV's. The injectors are side feed, and there is a lot of other different stuff.
I have some pictures, but my camera card reader wont play nice.. I dont have a huge knowledge of subaru engines, just picked it up as it did not cost a whole lot.
Thanks!

It's a phase 1 EJ20. AKA probably mid 90s... Does it look like this? I had one in my car at one point... spun a rod bearing, bad oiling system for high revs...

by the pictures it looks a bit like a v3 engine, however, would like to see the stock intercooler and what the stock turbo. It has the "air" valve on the intake, normao 4 port coil, but it also has the newer style belt tensioner. it could of/ most probably been rebuild before, with some newer stuff. but my guess is v3 or a 95-96 WRX try to get the part number of the air valve from the intake manifold this is what it is, incase you are not sure..

That is all the stuff I have from the engine.. no turbo or IC.. Tried a compression test and it shows next to nothing on all cylinders.
But rom the info I have gathered, and what everyone else seems to think.. it seems like it is a EJ20K..

hmmm... as for the compression test, if the engine has been sitting for a long time, that can happen. there may be "crud / stuff" on the valves or seats, preventing it from sealing properly, and also cylinder walls are totally dry. squirt some oil into the cylinders, rotate the engine few times fast (20 x) and try another compression test. (make sure you are on TDC) and the valves are closed - end of compression stroke.
See what happens, listen where the air is escaping from

It is a phase 1.5 engine from 96-97, could be a JDM wrx (not STi as it has over bucket shims) or an EU engine.

So, realistically. Is this thing worth the time/$$ to build up? Or is a part out required?
From what I have read so far, it seems to be semi closed deck but also has/had oiling issues?

Unless someone has fitted a later STi block it will be an open deck centre thrust bearing. There are people in the UK running 450 BHP on open decks. The cylinder heads are not prone to cracking as they do in the phase 2 heads.
If it was my money I would find a better base engine to start with, maybe an STi 5/6 phase 2 but again it will be an open deck block
