I've also read that Cobb and Ecutek's licensing aggrements with their pro-tuners prohibit them offering openecu tunes (or do not allow them to advertise it)? I don't know if that is true or not.

For some it is, for others it is not. It is not a blanket policy.

What is it based on? They give a discount if you promise not to use openecu?

Its symantics. They scared a lot of pro tuners away from open-source since cobb and ecutek floated around the info about kingpin and ********/ecu edit and blew it out of proportion to its tuners, which almost made them think it was illegal for them to be using open source tools. Most tuners are over it. I know Clark Turner, Junior (the shop), Dave Brown (MSPT), Dent Sport Garage, and many many other "professional" "pro-tuners" have been and continue to use ECU FLASH to offer low cost tunes to people who dont want to buy the commercial software, but have a "pro-tuner" tune their car.... I've actually worked with some of them and offered support here and there with enginuity/rom raider questions....

Yeah what Mike said. It seems odd that the only shop in Austin only uses the Cobb software now. They used to do ECUTek as well. I guess it just depends upon the tuner.
