Yeah my friend who was a Subaru tech, then a service advisor at one point, then a salesman, now a vendor of aftermarket parts told me I was smokin crack. A few web searches reveled that yes, most EJ engines do have stainless steel cylinder liners.

That ought to chum the waters a bit.

Seriously, what a mess. Thanks for the tunes and tweaks over the last few months, and I'm sorry NASIOC turned out like it did for you. It's a shame that personalities can get in the way of common interests. Most of us have our cars as hobbies, I prefer to keep mine that way, a nice enjoyable hobby I can share with like minded people.

I'm sure any interesting topics that come up there will surface here, as well. And with a much higher S/N ratio.

It is nice to have a place to go without the constant drama and bickering. Like minded people trying to achieve the same goals. ;)

After staring at this block for so long, drop in pistons are gonna work just fine. The block is semi-closed, the liners are pretty damn thick, and the weak spot is simply the pistons. I think just some forged CP pistons will do the trick with a quick hone so the new rings seat. :D

Ordering parts tomorrow! Well, hopefully, my daughter and wife are very sick, my wife is in the hospital and my daighter is right next to me and I am giving her pedialite. Parenting can be fun. I can;t tell if I am just super tired or if I am getting sick too now.

Gabe

You can see how thick the liner is. Ductile iron sleeves? Nah...

something i want to point out gabe... while you're getting ready to reinstall everything, keep the small ends of those rods off the bores. just wrap them with something soft (old sock, old section of radiator hose, etc).

I definitely will. I like I said before, I have owned 4 Subarus and currently own 2. I am not going to quit contributing to the Subaru community. ;)

Going IWG at first (I have the actuator). Got it used for 800 and sold my VF43 for 500. Off of my friends 07 FXT that blew all 4 ringlands using a UTEC. He had like 7k miles. About 3k on this turbo. ;)

That plus Meth should be fun at least.

There is a point in the std liners where they are only about 2mm thick. This has been highlighted in the UK by some guys running big boost on them and ovalising the std liners or splitting them. They look meaty from the top, but they arent.

This was running a GT30 at 1.9 bar so fairly understandable that it found the weak point.

I have just had a engine built with ductile steel top hat liners:

To try and avoid this happening to me.

My father in law is an ME. He took a look at the piston and said yes it was a casting defect. The information when I do a websearch on my SB part # comes up with TW and Chinese hits. I dunno if Subaru changed plants where they make these shortblocks, but the casting changed on the 07 blocks (and pistons I would think). Too many people have been reporting that the 07 blocks are not as strong as the previous MY blocks. All of them have broken a ringland. My father in law also stated that Ductile iron sleeves is the only way the a turbo motor should be built. Even aircraft aluminum engines have ductile iron sleeves. ;)

Subaru has been doing s*** things since 2004 when they released the 2004 WRX with a horrible delay in the CL->OL fueling for the cars. They wouldn't acknowledge a problem despite tons of people complaining about it. There is a long thread on NASIOC about it and such gurus as unclescotty and others bitch and complain and tell us to stop whining. Cobb's maps also suffered from the same problem at that point. People just didn't want to hear it.

I've given up posting over there for the most part. It's near impossible to have a reasonable discussion with anyone. I remember when I was running ~18 psi on my TD04 and people told me I was an idiot. My AFRs were also in the 12s on 93 octane pump gas...it's amazing what you can do when you run something efficiently....

In any case, sorry to hear about what you've had to deal with. It sucks when you are trying to help people out and some idiots have to go and screw it up for everyone.

Thanks Mike. Whatever the reasons for my being banned, it is done now. Nasioc lost one of its long standing members because of some really lame stuff from a regional forum that has had nothing but problems. The only thing that bugs me is that the people from SoD tried to flame and discredit me and obviously had their hands in it. I think it is due to us exposing the 07 STI issues. Loads of them have gone bad, stock and modded whether Subaru wants to admit it or not. I was not the only one in Austin banned either. Granted, I did say some things that were not very nice, but to warrant a perm ban, well, if Nasioc wants to perm ban a member who has owned 4 Subarus, so be it. I am glad I can contribute here still where my abrasive personality is accepted (or when I am wrong Bill just tells me to STFU). ;)

I can be reached on IWSTI, Osecuroms and Facebook (Just look for Gabe Widmer).

Gabe
