I was trying to rescale the fuel and timing tables for an 05 USDM WRX tonight and I could not increase the engine load column headers above 4, whereas in an 04 USDM WRX ROM I was able to set them to 8 (didn't try higher than that).

Likely you were using the new definitions this time for which engine load for the 16bit ecus is now represented in g/rev instead of 2*g/rev, meaning 4 g/rev = 8 2*g/rev.

The raw value on the ecu does not change when you change the unit conversion. It is just like psi v. bar - just two different ways to represent the same thing. So, reading an older map with the new defs will still read g/rev and nothing in the rom image has changed.

The reason it was switched is to be consistent with the 32bit ecus.
