Alright, so last night I got my tactrix cable in the mail, and thought I would start off by hooking it up to the OBD2 port and seeing what the motor is doing ('07 STi). The kernel (2.6.20 on Ubuntu 7.04, on 1st. gen intel MacBook Pro, dual booted with Mac OS X) recognized the tactrix cable (future data or something kernel module) and it shows up under lsusb. At first when I launched the logger, nothing showed up under available com ports. I read this: (edit - won't let me post a Univeral Resource Locator yet...search linux install in quotes on the forum and it will come up) and had to copy over the RXTXcomm.jar to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/ext and librxtxSerial.so to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386. I launched the logger again, and this time it picked up the cable. It would talk with the ECU, and gave me an ECU ID. However, the entire left pane with the fields you can select to log was blank. Starting and stopping logging wrote no files. The logger and ecu definition files are the April 19th/20th ones.
I got my 5 year-old brick Toshiba laptop out of the closet (with WinXP), loaded the software, plugged it in, and it worked, showing all of the fields. The battery of course dies after 5 minutes of use with a full charge.
Does anyone know what the deal is?
Also, ECUFlash installs and loads fine under Wine in Linux (of course the driver install fails)...does anyone know if there is a way to point ECUFlash, running under Wine, to the TTYUSB0 port and operate in serial mode, or any other ways so I don't have to deface my MacBook Pro? Thanks,
-Rich

Here's a screenshot of what's happening. My user is in the uucp group, BTW.
rachel-fanfalone . kicks-ass . net : 8080/stuff/screenshot1.png (copy and paste into the browser address bar, remove the spaces...you may need to add hyper text transport protocol, a colon, and some slashers before it if you are using Internet Explorer...I don't have enough posts to post a univeral resource link yet, unfortunately.)
Note to admins...I am a well seasoned web developer, and there are much better ways of preventing spam than searching for URI related strings. Try encrypting the field names, decrypting them with a key stored in the session server side, and using honey pots (i.e. CSS hidden fields that would never be filled out by a human). Just FYI.

Unfortunately most of the spam we were getting was from humans, not bots. The only way to get rid of them was to make it just a bit more annoying, and it was important because they were posting pictures of hard core pornography and such. I'm open to suggestions, but dealing with humans is a must.
Anyway, it looks like your problem is that, for whatever reason, RomRaider is not detecting your OpenPort cable. Is it plugged in, and tested with any other apps?

I didn't realize your problem was with humans. Yes, there is little that can be done about the human factor besides making it more of a PITA to spam. Banning the words viagra, cialis, gambling, penis enlargement, and free vacation eliminate 99% of the form spam I get. Having to deal with 508 compliance does make you figure out interesting ways to outsmart robots with alternatives to captchas though.
Regarding RomRaider, I have tested it on Linux and in Windows, and it goes through the same exact negotiation with the cable's serial to usb converter (searching, connected, displays ecu ID the same on both), but it is like it just dies after it handshakes with the ECU in Linux, while in Windows it displays all of the fields that can be logged and lets me start logging with a click, or the rear defroster switch (how f'n neat). The device shows up under 'lsusb', which would mean that it is both plugged in and detected by the kernel with a driver.
Is there an archive where I can try older versions of the software? I'm 99% sure the computer is using Sun Java, not GJC, but I'll double check. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you,
-Rich

Hey guys, thanks for the help! I finally got it working. I know nothing about Java, and I tried installing Sun Java 5 and Java 6 and it still didn't work. But my distro (Ubuntu) has the Gnu Java VM installed by default, and running any java app from the shell using 'java' pointed to the GCJ java. So I updated the symlink at /etc/alternatives/java to point to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java, and it works! What an amazing application! Now I have to figure out how to get it to work with the LC-1 I just ordered. Thanks again!

Hello hotspoons,

Yes, I know, but didn't try it with ECUflash.
Change dir to $HOME/.wine/dosdevices. Create a symlink from /dev/ttyUSBx (or the udev device you created) to next free com port device (e.g. "ln -s /dev/GPS com1").
Btw, which type of carputer did you choose? I'm thinking of going the same way, running a carputer with linux, doing all the staff I like to do in the car (MP3, GPS tracking, OBD logging, monitoring LPG ECU).

Is there any way I can pass a command argument to tel it that my serial device is /dev/ttyUSB0?

Okay apparently i'm a moron. I read the "INSTALL" text file under lib and it's instructions were pretty clear that I need to copy certain .jar files to the lib/ext directory of my jre install. I guess one of the downsides of using linux is the installs aren't quite as slick. Anyways, it's all good now and I'm able to datalog. Perhaps some kinda "hey you idiot read this file" message in the jar install for Linux might be a good idea for people who dont always go poking around in the subdirectories looking for text files to read.
