Having read articles in the ECUTEK website, I've always wanted to get into ECU tuning. I came across your thread in NASIOC announcing about this software so I dowloaded version 0.2.6 but dont know how to open it :(

I have a very limited background about Java language nor the ECU architecture. I dont know if these two subjects are prerequisite to using RomRaider but I indeed want to try it (with the consequence taken in mind  )

Could you walk me through steps in getting this RomRaider software up and running. Any books/websites that you reccomend for a solid background about ECU architecture?

If it doesn't take too much of your time, some kind of short step-by-step tutorial or "easy to understand" instruction is highly preferred.

Thanks in advance

You won't need to know anything about Java or the ECU internal workings to use RomRaider -- just the same basic tuning knowledge like you'd need to tune with any other software. To run it, just uncompress all the files to any directory and double click on the RomRaider.jar file. If it doesn't work, you'll need to go to http://java.sun.com and get the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment.

What RomRaider allows you to do is add support for your ECU if it isn't already there. And to do that, you'll need to be able to disassemble the ROM and have knowledge of assembly.

Edit: I think Scoobypedia is a great place to start. Check this out. http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/Knowledge/ECU

Qoncept; Thanks for the java runtime. Now I can get the RomRaider run. Next is to make RomRaider regcognize my ecu. My ECU version is AH751-5142. My car is 2004 UKDM WRX. Do yo have ECU definition for my car? Do you have a definition library where can i search one for my ecu?
In the mean time, I will try my best to give you a copy of ROM image once I get the Openport cable.

We are working on adding definitions for ALL current used ROM files. I have finished most of the USDM definitions and may begin working on the EURO/JDM ones however I am working on the USDM STi definitions at this time. Soon enough!

You want the JRE 5.0. Then you should be able to just double click on RomRaider.jar

I hate to turn you lose on this big nasty thread, but I haven't gone through it myself.. But there's probably some good info here: http://openecu.org/viewtopic.php?t=219
