I'd love to, if only I knew how. I am typing on my home PC and the ecu software is running on my laptop. When the cmd console screen comes up on the laptop, how do I get it to the PC to post? Screen dump to something?

Tried today to load ecuflash onto my desktop. 1st time install. Loaded ecuflash 1.29a, and then openport; all went fine.
Next plugged in the cable & the computer did it's search for drivers, loaded something (not sure what but presumably was a driver) and finished.
I then unplugged the cable to the usb port & fired up ecuflash. That came up fine, inserted cable and BINGO, ecuflash saw the cable & bottom rhs said Openport Subaru 1.3 etc AND STAYED THERE!
Ah HA! I though. Just uninstall ecuflash by using the usual windows uninstaller. Uninstalled the serial port driver the same way. Rebooted and re-installed ecuflash.
Plugged in the cable expecting to be asked about finding drivers, BUT it did not do that on my laptop reinstall. It just came up with a small dialogue box saying new hardware found and pretty much that was it.
Pulled out the cable on the laptop, fired up ecuflash, re-inserted cable and again, the Openport bit comes up at the bottom but disappears after about a second.
SO, the problem looks like it's with installing the software when the cable is first inserted. But I thought I removed everything....obviously not.
Anyone with some computer brains out there able to tell me how to totally install this thing so I can make a fresh install, just like I did on my PC? Otherwise I am doomed to a life of either continually wrestling with COMS or I could always rebuild my laptop Seems a bit drastic!

when uninstalling ecuflash, you need to uninstall both the application and the cable drivers. you can do this via control panel -> add/remove programs in windows. then reboot and install the new version and associated drivers. then reboot again to make sure and plug in your cable. it should now be detected and you should be prompted to associate the drivers with it etc..

Thanks Paul. Uninstalling ecuflash is easy from remove/uninstall software, but what is the driver called that I am looking to remove? Any idea?

So just to be clearer, remove ecuflash, can do. Remove the Openport driver, that's fine too, it has it's own uninstall program. WHat I need to know is how do I uninstall the cable driver?

we might be talking about the same thing, re: openport driver and cable driver. I did this recently myself when i upgraded to ecuflash 1.29 from 1.28, and i had to uninstall 2 drivers via the add/remove programs thing in windows. don't really remember their names, something like "FTI..."? if you can't find anything, you may have already uninstalled them.

Yeah I uninstalled that FTI thing this morning but when I re-installed everything back today, I still had the original problem (Openport Subaru not staying in bottom rhs window).
Interestingly, after the reinstall, the FTI bit has not shown up again either, suggesting that is not the driver that is installed when the cable goes in.
So I'm back to square one unfortunately unless someone can advise how I go about uninstalling whatever it is that is installed when the cable is plugged in.
Maybe an email to TACTRIX is in order......

That's fine Paul. I thank you for your help.
I have sent a note off to Tactrix to find out how a total uninstall is done & will post anything I learn on this thread so everyone else can know.
Fingers crossed.

When I upgraded ecuflah I had to manually force the tactrix cable to use the newer drivers. Open up the device manager with the tactrix cable hooked up. Find the tactrix cable, right click on it and select update driver. Now Select Install from a specific location, click next, now select include this location checkbox, and browse to \program files\openecu\ecuflash\drivers Click next, it should then update the drives to the correct ones. Let me know if that works.

Thanks for the advice turbo022. Unfortunately it did not work. After updating the driver through device manager, rebooting and starting up ecuflash, connection of the cable provides only momentary connection to ecuflash (as reported by ecuflash) and if I try to read the ecu in this condition, ecuflash says "unable to open OpenPort device [ ]"
I have a response now from Colby at Tactrix & will try that.

Well guys, Colby at Tactrix got back to me pretty quickly with a suggestion (which was basically to reinstall the driver over the existing driver) but that did not work either.
I am going to make the ultimate sacrifice......Blow away C drive, re build it and then re-install the cable driver that way. Kind of drastic I know but the old laptop needed a re-build anyway. Boot up was getting too slow from all the stuff I have installed/removed over the last 2 years.
Hopefully this will work. If not, I'm back to my old method of getting a connection......

Oh, just for the record in case some other schmuck wants to try, this is what Colby of Tactrix suggested.....
The way drivers work in Windows make them difficult to truly "uninstall". I
would try the following:
* from the start menu, "Run..." devmgmt.msc (device manager)
* within the tree view of device manager, expand the item "Universal Serial
Bus Controllers"
* inside of this, you should see your cable "OpenPort 1.3 Subaru"
* right click this item and choose "Update Driver..."
* choose "No, not this time" + Next
* choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" + Next
* choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." + Next
* press the "Have Disk..." button
* press the "Browse..." button
* browse to C:\Program Files\OpenECU\EcuFlash\drivers and press OK
* you should see "OpenPort 1.3 Subaru" listed now. press Next
* press Finish
try EcuFlash now...

Well guys, as I could not resolve the connectivity problem, I ended up formatting my drive & re-installing everything. Installed ecu-flash, plugged in the cable, the drivers loaded and BINGO, all works like it should.
Obviously I screwed something up in the original install and no matter how I tried to uninstall, key bits and pieces remained on the laptop which meant a real 'fresh' install was not possible.
Now to start playing around with this thing.
Anybody with an Australian WRX know how to log the IAM value?
