Exhaust gas temperature provides a clue about how healthy the engine is running. Actual temperature readings depend on the placement and type of exhaust gas sensor, and are not comparable from vehicle to vehicle.
Low exhaust gas temperature may indicate an overly rich AFR. High exhaust gas temperature may indicate an overly lean AFR, or even detonation.
